Summary

This week, I sat down with my good friend Lee Meacham , Workforce Development Officer at the Albion Foundation, to explore a question that sits at the heart of Coaching: 👉 How can we, as coaches, create the best possible environment for young people to thrive? Across the conversation, three powerful themes kept coming up: 1️⃣ Relationships & Safe Spaces – Before technique or tactics, young people need trust. Coaches, parents, and players must feel safe to communicate openly. That’s what builds the confidence to make mistakes, learn, and grow. 2️⃣ Clear Standards & the Power of “Why” – High standards empower young people. Whether it’s punctuality, kit, or shaking hands, these “brilliant basics” create discipline and respect. But explaining why those standards matter is what really drives buy-in and connects sport to life skills beyond the pitch. 3️⃣ Enjoyment & Competition – If it’s not fun, they won’t come back. In grassroots, fun often means social connection. In academies, it’s healthy competition that sharpens performance. Either way, enjoyment is the fuel that keeps young people engaged. Lee shared practical strategies as well as delving into real-world stories, such as supporting a player who fasted during Ramadan, or giving leadership roles to a disruptive 10-year-old who turned out to be carrying huge responsibilities at home. The message was clear: when coaches truly see young people, understand their circumstances, reinforce positives, and explain the “why”, we unlock potential they often don’t even see in themselves. 💡 Coaching is not just about sport. It’s about creating environments where young people can grow as people. Whether you’re a grassroots volunteer, academy coach, or teacher, this episode will give you tools, insights, and inspiration…
