Summary

Invited to the Milan Women's Bookshop by Maria Nadotti, psychiatrist and activist Samah Jabr talks about her work in Palestine and the pathogenic character of the political system of occupation and apartheid, with its relentless exposure to violence, oppression and humiliation. How the Zionist colonial project is, in essence, the reduction of the individual to powerlessness. However, despite the ongoing genocide, Jabr also celebrates صمود (sumud) - an Arabic word difficult to translate which signifies steadfastness, resistance – of the Palestinian people. As part of our series "Memory for Denial" we present here an edited verison montage of the talk she gave in Milan (in English). Thanks a lot to Maria Nadotti & Casa delle Donne Milano! Editing: Silvia Maglioni & Graeme Thomson Dr. Samah Jabr is a leading Palestinian psychiatrist, psychotherapist, writer, and public intellectual from Jerusalem. One of the first female psychiatrists in Palestine, she has dedicated her life to serving Palestinians, with a focus on treating individuals who are suffering from trauma and trauma-related stress—particularly those relating to chronic political violence, displacement, and imprisonment. Author of several books, Jabr regularly gives lectures and teaches about mental health. She continues to work as a psychiatrist throughout Palestine today. In 2025 she published the collection of essays "Radiance in Pain and Resilience: the global reverberation of Palestinian historical trauma".
