In a letter to the UN Security Council, the secretary-general outlines three models for a successor mission that would likely include hundreds or thousands of troops to help ensure the Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire holds. The most ambitious version would field roughly 350 UN military observers, supported by four infantry battalions of 750 troops each and a 700-strong reserve, with the capacity to monitor most of the Blue Line and conduct patrols toward the Litani River. UNIFIL currently deploys about 7,500 peacekeepers from nearly 50 countries along the 120-kilometer border between Lebanon and Israel, a buffer presence that has been maintained since 1978. The proposal appears aimed at providing a framework alternative to last year’s decision to terminate UNIFIL by creating a new mission under a different structure. Separately, Guterres has said peacekeepers would still be needed after the current mandate ends on December 31, 2026, and he laid out three options by June 1 to keep UN personnel in Lebanon to monitor the Blue Line and support the Lebanese armed forces, with contingents ranging from nearly 2,000 to more than 5,500.
