If baptism and communion don’t save us, why did Jesus command them? In this Extra Shot of Grace in the Grind, Cody Hudson digs deeper into baptism and the Lord’s Supper—and why reducing them to “just symbols” may miss much of what Christ gave His Church. Christians can fall into two ditches. One turns baptism and communion into rituals that somehow save us. The other becomes so afraid of ritualism that practices Jesus explicitly commanded begin to sound almost optional. Scripture gives us something better. Communion does not save you. But that does not make either one insignificant. Baptism points to our union with Christ—His death, His resurrection, and our new life in Him. The Lord’s Supper calls believers to remember Christ, proclaim His death, recognize one another as His body, and look forward to His return. These practices do not complete something Jesus left unfinished. They point us back to what He finished. Baptism says: I belong to Christ. The Table says: We belong to Christ. So hold your convictions firmly enough to obey Scripture and humbly enough to recognize that faithful Christians have disagreed over some of the details.
