He was born in 1504 in northern Italy, in humble circumstances, and given the name Antonio Ghislieri. From a young age, he was drawn to religious life and entered the Dominican Order, where he embraced a life of discipline, study, and prayer. As a Dominican, he became known for his integrity and zeal for truth. He served in various roles within the Church, including as a teacher and later as a bishop and cardinal. In each position, he worked to uphold sound doctrine and moral reform, especially in response to the upheaval caused by the Protestant Reformation.
