She was born in 1566 in Florence, Italy, into a noble and wealthy family. Given the name Caterina at baptism, she received a strong Catholic upbringing and showed signs of unusual devotion even as a child. She loved prayer, practiced small acts of penance, and often spoke about her desire to belong completely to God.
