He lived in tenth-century Spain, during a time when much of the Iberian Peninsula was under Muslim rule and Christians often found themselves caught in political and religious conflicts. Pelagius was born around the year 911 into a Christian family in the Kingdom of León. No one could have imagined that his short life would become a symbol of steadfast faith. When Pelagius was still a child, his uncle, a bishop, was taken captive during a conflict between the Christian kingdoms and the Caliphate of Córdoba.
