She lived during the ninth century in Muslim-ruled Spain, when practicing the Catholic faith often required quiet courage. Several members of her own family had already suffered for the faith, and their witness left a lasting impression on the young Aurea. As a child, she was drawn to religious life and eventually entered a convent in Córdoba. There she embraced a hidden life of prayer, silence, and devotion to God. The convent became a refuge from the tensions of the outside world, where Christians often lived under pressure to compromise their beliefs. Aurea seemed content to spend the rest of her days in the quiet rhythm of prayer and community life.…
