If you had met him as a young man, "future saint" is probably the last thing you would have guessed. He was born in 1550 in the Kingdom of Naples and grew into an enormous man, standing well over six feet tall at a time when that was highly unusual. He followed his father into military life and became a soldier, but he also developed a serious gambling addiction. More than once he gambled away everything he owned. At one point, he was so destitute that he had to take work as a laborer on a Capuchin construction project simply to survive. That was where God got hold of him.
