She lived during the fifteenth century, a period when Italy produced many remarkable saints, yet Veronica chose a path that kept her almost entirely out of the public eye. She was born in 1445 near Milan and was given the name Giovanna. As a young girl, she showed an unusual love for prayer and a desire to belong completely to God. While many expected her to marry and settle into ordinary family life, Veronica felt drawn instead to the cloister. She eventually entered the Augustinian convent of Saint Martha in Milan, where she received the religious name Veronica. Life inside the convent was anything but glamorous.
