He was born in 1033 in Aosta, in the region of northern Italy, and from a young age showed both intelligence and a desire for God. After a period of wandering and searching, he entered the Benedictine monastery of Bec in Normandy, where he came under the guidance of the prior Lanfranc. There, Anselm’s gifts flourished in a life of study, prayer, and teaching. Anselm eventually became abbot of Bec and later Archbishop of Canterbury. Yet his life as a bishop was not easy. He faced repeated conflicts with the kings of England over the rights and freedom of the Church. Rather than compromise the integrity of his office, Anselm endured exile more than once, choosing fidelity over favor.
