Summary
It was the summer of 2007, and the heat had settled over Denton County like a held breath. I was driving back from a friend's place outside Millbrook, taking the old county road that runs parallel to the dried-up riverbed. At a quarter past three in the morning, I saw a figure standing at the side of the road—a man in a dark jacket, no car, no phone, no bag. I pulled over because something about his stillness felt wrong, like he'd been standing there for hours, maybe days. He didn't flinch when my headlights hit him. He didn't blink. When I rolled down the window, he turned his head very slowly, and I saw his face—not old, not young, just worn in a way that didn't match his clothes. He said, 'The road goes on, but it doesn't go back.' Then he pointed down the asphalt, toward a bend I'd driven past a hundred times. I waited for him to say more. He didn't. And the thing is, I've driven that road every night since—I can't stop—and I see him just before the bend, same spot, same jacket, same words. But last night, when I came home, there was gravel on my doorstep. And a single headlight beam coming from the end of my driveway.
