He then allegedly tipped her out of her chair, took her wallet and drove away. Twenty-one blows. Inside her own home. While she was simply sitting down to eat her lunch. Whatever the eventual verdict, the allegations presented in court paint a horrifying picture of brutality. Tonight I'm asking a bigger question: What the hell has happened to Britain? This is not simply about one appalling killing. It is about the growing sense that our country has become harder, colder and more violent. Too many elderly people are frightened inside their own homes. Too many criminals appear to have no respect for life. Too many decent, law-abiding people feel abandoned by a system that seems incapable of protecting them. But there is another deeply disturbing question that must also be examined. Was Ann Widdecombe targeted because of who she was and what she believed? We do not yet know whether politics played any part in this killing. That is a matter for the evidence and ultimately the court. But the question cannot simply be dismissed. Was this solely a savage robbery, or was there also a political motive? And if Ann Widdecombe was targeted because of her beliefs, what would that say about the toxic state of politics in modern Britain?
