You leave a child's bedroom tidy. An hour later it's chaos. Nobody decided to create disorder. It just happened. That's entropy in miniature. The universe has a powerful, relentless tendency toward disorder. Which raises the question: how does anything as ordered as a living cell — let alone a human being — exist at all? The answer isn't that life defeats entropy. It's that life does something more elegant: it recruits entropy.
