Summary

A pattern carved into stone is not, by itself, information. It becomes information the moment something can read it and do something different because of it. Without a processor, it's geology. The pattern and the processor define each other โ€” neither exists without the other. This is the recursive pair. It is the mechanism behind everything alive โ€” from the first chemical networks that learned to hold on against entropy, to the neural architecture of a human brain. The biological information it has produced over four billion years dwarfs anything we have built. We have barely begun to appreciate its depth.
