In an amazing, Stokesian piece of theatre, the next ball was a wicket… to Ben Stokes. The Test turned truly bizarre, with the skipper's wild innings as an opener and a shuffled batting order that mimicked his approach, raising serious questions about the tactics, and Stokes’ post-match comments about not enjoying playing for England. New Zealand, to their immense credit, remembered there was a Test and series to be won and kept their heads screwed on amongst the chaos, with Daryl Mitchell grinding out a superb century before their high-quality bowlers ripped out England’s top order.
