Understanding Performance Anxiety Performance anxiety affects a staggering 75% of us, regardless of expertise or field, and it doesn’t fade with success. As Dr. Fish explains, “Even those who rise in their careers often face more performance anxiety than those starting out.” The larger the stakes, the larger the threat but also the greater the opportunity to grow. He breaks the mechanics down into three factors: * Performing in front of others, whether in a boardroom or on stage, can trigger anxiety. * Feeling judged: the perception of being evaluated undermines self-confidence. * The perceived threat of negative judgment from not landing a job to deeper existential fears. Importantly, this anxiety isn’t a lack of confidence. It’s the amygdala, our brain’s ancient threat detector, flooding us with adrenaline better suited for fleeing wild animals than speaking in boardrooms.
