Summary
Luna is still in the Beech Street attic, Esther's journal open in her hands, the shadow child waiting at the edge of the lantern light. She has learned that Esther gave her name willingly to something in the sycamore roots—and that the shadow child was born from that vow. Now Luna must decide what to do with the truth. The journal holds one more entry, dated the day after the lamp was first lit, and it describes what Esther saw after she made the promise: something that wore her face and walked up Beech Street. Luna follows the trail to the church basement, where she finds a door marked with her grandmother's maiden name—and a keyhole shaped like the lamp's flame. Inside is a room full of mirrors, each showing a different version of Sycamore Ridge, and a photograph of Esther holding the lamp as a woman, not a child. The shadow child speaks Luna's borrowed name, and Luna understands that the cycle will only end when she chooses which version of the story is real. She picks up the photograph and steps toward a mirror that shows a street where the lamp has never been found.
