Summary
Luna reaches for the lid of her own casket in the cemetery of Sycamore Ridge, where a funeral procession of her own faces has just passed. The shadow child whispers from inside, and when Luna opens the casket, she finds not a body but a mirror reflecting a version of herself she does not recognize. She follows the woman in black through the graveyard to a mausoleum that should not exist, where a door opens onto a staircase descending into the earth. At the bottom, she finds a room full of clocks stopped at different times, and a figure seated at a desk who claims to be the keeper of the cycle. Luna learns that the third lamp was never meant to be lit—it was a trap set by the first Luna to contain something older than the town. The keeper offers her a choice: take her grandmother's place as the keeper, or let the lamp burn out and erase all versions of Sycamore Ridge. Luna refuses both and walks back up the stairs, but the door at the top is gone, and the clocks begin to chime in sequence, counting down to something she cannot see.
