In November 1988, roughly 80 Sri Lankan Tamil mercenaries from PLOTE seized key points in the Maldivian capital and tried to overthrow President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom. India answered the distress call within hours, launching a long-range airborne intervention by the 50th Independent Parachute Brigade—primarily 6 Para—across more than 2,000 kilometers with almost no prior intelligence. The result was a textbook strategic airlift and rapid special forces-style seizure of the airfield and capital that restored the government with near-zero Indian casualties.
