Summary

Maya Cowan is an Anthropology PhD candidate at Binghamton University preparing to defend her dissertation, Knowing the Unknown: the Epistemic Culture of UAP (Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena) Science. Her research focuses on how cultures of expertise are emerging within the growing scientific study of UAP, drawing from three years of ethnographic fieldwork conducted alongside UAP scientists and researchers. Through her work, Maya examines how knowledge, credibility, and scientific authority are being shaped within this evolving and controversial academic discipline. In the Summer 2026 semester at Binghamton University, Maya is teaching courses in The Paranormal and the Unexplained and Intro to Anthropology. Her research interests include scientific investigations into UAP, UAP studies, science and technology studies, epistemic cultures, cultures of expertise, and the epistemologies surrounding anomalous phenomena. Prior to focusing on UAP research, her academic work explored topics including money and finance, sustainability in finance, community-based participatory research, ethnography, and research methods in cultural anthropology.
