Two weeks of unexplained absence, surrounding a figure that has done more than anyone else to keep Putin war economy going, through 4+ years of full-scale war in Europe. She supposedly didn’t attend SPIEF, and an important rate cut has been signalled without her presence. Nabiullina was the most strategically consequential enabler of Putin’s war, and she has not been seen in public since 28 May. So, the rumours go, she reached a red line in service of Putin’s regime, beyond which she was not prepared to go. And no, that red line did not involve the industrial slaughter of Ukrainians. The limit for her was apparently a proposed closing of the Russian border under the auspices of martial law. Could this be a sign that Putin is about to crank his senseless war into a new phase – full mobilisation of the Russian herd population?
