They were old, slow, and lacked any protection, something that's important in war. In 1979, the Pentagon launched the requirements for their replacement. The name was the High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle or HMMWV, a mouthful. Since this was a huge contract, more than 60 companies showed interest. But only three submitted prototypes: Teledyne Continental, Chrysler Defense, and AM General. Their prototypes went through 600,000 miles of test driving, including desert and arctic conditions. The winner was AM General. In 1993, the company won the rights to produce the HMMWV. By the way, everyone in the armed forces was tired of pronouncing HMMWV, so they nicknamed it the HUMVEE. -- 0:00 Hummer - Intro 0:20 Hummer - The Military Roots 1:58 Hummer The Terminator Wants a Humvee 2:57 Hummer - The H1 is born 6:41 Hummer - Hummer Takes Over The World (Almost) 8:27 Hummer - Hummer Goes Mainstream 10:36 Hummer - The Fall and Rebirth of Hummer -- Follow Caya: https://twitter.com/cayahere https://instagram.com/caya_here Turn on notifications for the podcast & rate it a 5-star for new episodes.
