Summary

Australia's Racial Discrimination Act, brought in by the Gough Whitlam government in 1975, is an optimistic attempt to legislate away racism in public life, like housing and employment. Section 18c tries to do that with hate speech. And that's perhaps a challenge not befitting Australia's legislative system—or, maybe, any. We have a look at an ongoing case by the Zionist Federation of Australia's Alon Cassuto against the long-time SBS Newsreader Mary Kostakidis, and Ciaran learns about some of the perhaps silliest 18c cases brought up throughout history.
