A witness swears he saw Eamon step through the Drury Street door of the covered market just before ten, in his dark overcoat, minutes before violence in the vaults below. But the coat Eamon was wearing was not his own — and the man who lent it, Ronan Kellett, narrow-faced and composed, with very pale grey eyes, has a habit of turning up wherever Arthur happens to be. To clear his friend, Arthur must prove the whole case rests on a witness who saw a coat and never a face, and admit that the fifth pint did not stop him noticing the frayed cuff, only from realising, in time, what it meant.
