The trouble is that the grave is not empty. Someone is already lying in it. And the village, which forgets nothing and forgives less, slowly gives up a name it buried long ago: Elspeth Dane, the quiet fair-haired girl who was companion to Lady Parminster, and who was said to have gone away to her aunt — though she left her little brown case behind in the box room.
