Summary
The Oilers just pulled off a high-stakes gamble: signing veteran goalie Frederik Andersen on a one-year, $1M deal with bonuses tied to performance. He’s coming off a Cup-winning run with Carolina, where he was lights-out in the first three rounds — until a brutal knee injury in Game 6 ended his postseason. Now, he’s expected to miss October, possibly longer, forcing the Oilers to lean on less experienced netminders Devon Levi and Tristan Jarry. Andersen’s track record is solid when healthy — but staying healthy has been his Achilles’ heel. The Oilers are betting big that this low-risk, high-reward move pays off if he can stay on the ice and deliver elite play, potentially splitting starts to keep him fresh. Best case? He’s back to his old self and leads them deep into the playoffs. Worst case? His injury lingers, he plays fewer than 20 games, and the bonus targets vanish — leaving the team with a costly underperformer.
