Summary
In a chilling moment of heroism, American Airlines reservations agent Vanessa Minter received a frantic call from Flight 11’s flight attendant Betty Ong on 9/11, who calmly reported the plane was being hijacked—information that helped trigger the shutdown of U.S. airspace. Ong’s final words, “Pray for us,” echoed as the plane crashed into the World Trade Center. Minter, overwhelmed and helpless, later penned a touching letter to Ong’s family, honoring her bravery. Twenty-five years later, Minter finally met Ong’s family in California, visiting her memorial, sharing tea with her 99-year-old mother, and feeling like part of the family—while Harry Ong reminds us that Betty was a hero, but so were the nearly 3,000 others who perished that day and the countless responders who rose to the occasion.
