Summary
A 46-year-old man, Larry Montes, faces federal hate crime charges after storming a synagogue during Shabbat service, hurling antisemitic and racial slurs—admitting afterward his actions were fueled by hatred toward Jewish and Black people. The attack rattled the Jewish community and faith leaders alike, prompting NYPD’s top official to vow Jewish families shouldn’t live in fear of practicing their religion in NYC. Already charged with aggravated harassment and assault, Montes has pleaded not guilty and is set for federal arraignment in Lower Manhattan, where conviction could mean up to 40 years behind bars—a pivotal moment in the fight against hate.
