Summary
Yankees add veteran catching depth by signing Christian Bethancourt to a minor league deal, sending him to Triple-A as a right-handed bat to bolster backup options—especially with Ali Sánchez’s options exhausted. While this move doesn’t shift their primary goal of acquiring a right-handed hitting catcher before the August 3rd deadline, it gives them flexibility in case of injury or roster needs. With limited top-tier options available and teams like the Rays, Red Sox, and Dodgers also hunting catchers, the Yankees are eyeing high-profile targets like Ryan Jeffers (a long shot due to Twins’ playoff push) or Tyler Stephenson and Luis Torrens, each with their own baggage. Still, Austin Wells remains the cornerstone behind the plate, valued for his defensive work and pitcher rapport—even if his offensive stats have dipped this season—helping anchor a rotation leading the league in ERA.
