Summary
The Rangers’ offseason brought fresh talent and youthful promise, with several young stars poised to make their mark — even if it’s a long shot for some. Defenseman Alberts Smits, just 18 and drafted fifth overall, is NHL-ready despite his age, having played overseas and scoring assists at the Olympics. Drew Fortescue, who got nine NHL games last year, battles for a spot in a stacked defense corps and may start in Hartford but could earn a call-up. Adam Sykora, 21, flashed energy and tenacity with 3 goals and an assist in 11 games — he’ll begin in Hartford but could climb into the lineup if needed. Liam Greentree, acquired via trade, boasts a history of 30+ goal seasons and delivered strong play last year; his playmaking could unlock a bigger role. And goalie Dylan Garand, impressive in his pro debut, will compete with veteran Joonas Korpisalo for the backup spot behind Igor Shesterkin.
