Summary
Fire Island is hosting its first-ever queer film festival, the Grove & Pines Film Festival, starting September 18th in Cherry Grove and The Pines. Designed to honor Fire Island’s decades-long legacy as a sanctuary for LGBTQ+ communities, the three-day event features a diverse lineup of queer-centered films, including “A Deeper Love: The Story of Miss Peppermint” and “Sex in Drag,” plus appearances by Alan Cumming and Johnny Sibilly. Amid shrinking federal support for LGBTQ+ arts, the festival serves as both a cultural celebration and a defiant act of community resilience. With an app for navigation, local business discounts, and even a late-night ferry, organizers are making it accessible and welcoming — a vibrant tribute to queer creativity and history.
