Summary
The city’s Law Department just flipped its stance, now backing the reopening of College Walk — a major street through Columbia University’s campus that’s been shut since spring 2024 amid protests. After years of disruption, especially hurting older residents and those with disabilities, the city’s new position comes after reviewing legal battles and even overturning its own past arguments. While Columbia hasn’t commented, its new president hints at openness to talks, and student workers hope this shift will restore vital neighborhood access and community ties.
