Summary
Jerome “Big Duck” Smith, a towering Civil Rights activist and beloved New Orleans mentor who died at 87, is being honored with a city council proposal to rename the Tremé Recreation Center in his name — a fitting tribute to the man who turned protest into poetry and youth into culture. From sit-ins to founding Tambourine & Fan, his life was a rhythm of justice and joy. Thousands gathered at Gallier Hall and the Mahalia Jackson Theater to mourn and celebrate a legend whose legacy echoes through every street he walked and every child he lifted.
