Summary
Nebraska powered to a 49-21 win over Ohio in their 2026 opener, led by Jamal Rule’s explosive 122-yard, two-touchdown performance and Mekhi Nelson’s dual-threat contributions. But the Huskers paid a steep price for nine penalties—65 yards lost across all phases, even negating a touchdown—highlighting discipline issues that plagued last year’s team. Despite a rough start, QB Anthony Colandrea sparked a second-half surge with five consecutive touchdown drives, as Coach Rhule credited improved execution over self-inflicted errors. Extreme heat (field temps hitting 140°) added to the strain, with players visibly struggling and some falling ill on the field. Still, the victory showcased promising running back depth and underscored the critical need for discipline and conditioning as the season unfolds.
