Summary

In the aftermath of the United States’ removal of Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro on January 3rd, 2026, the world is rife with speculation as to the reasons for the operation, ranging from oil politics, drug interdiction, and broader geopolitical rivalries between the United States and the coalition of global superpowers in the BRICS alliance. Although generally unpopular with Venezuelans residing in the country, the 7 million or so Venezuelan diaspora in the United States has largely expressed support for the removal of Maduro, whom they see as a continuation of failed Chavismo policies that has seen the country’s major economic driver and export of oil go from a production level of 4 million barrels a day in the early 2000s to less than 1 million today and left the country largely insolvent with rampant inflation and corruption.
