A graduate of Stanford Medical School, with a public health degree from Johns Hopkins University, his career began by helping set up a community health project in a Himalayan valley a week’s walk from the road in Nepal. He later set up a remote district hospital there as a teaching hospital for Nepali doctors, whom he supervised. He spent over 30 years practicing as an emergency physician in the United States. He studied pure mathematics at Harvard, attaining a master’s degree, before pursuing medicine. This instilled a desire to understand the production of health in populations.
