Summary
Sylvia Bishop was the first Black woman to be licensed as a Thoroughbred trainer in the United States, plying her trade at Charles Town for years and memorialized with a stakes race that bears her name. These days, her grandson, Michael Jones, Jr. follows in her footsteps, training at CT. He appears on this episode of Midlantic Racing Today. Jones struck out on his own as a trainer in 2014, winning two races that year and gradually building his barn into where it is today: currently tied for fifth in the standings with 24 wins at CT (27 wins overall) and having won 50 or more races for three consecutive years. Through it all, he says his grandmother remains his greatest influence.
