Karen's father, Nels Mickelson, was a Danish immigrant who forged a path in the logging industry upon his arrival in America in 1866. His success provided economic opportunities during a transformative period in American history; however, it came at a significant environmental cost, as vast expanses of forest were sacrificed in the name of progress.
