Summary
Zach Cregger's Resident Evil drops Austin Abrams into a nightmare, and we can't agree on when the laughs start getting in the way of the scares. Recording from Austin during Fantastic Fest, the Messed Up Movies crew breaks down Resident Evil (2026), from its vicious opening and brilliantly staged jump scares to a bigger, louder finale that doesn't land equally for everyone. We get into Abrams' panicked everyman performance, Paul Walter Hauser, the chaos of Raccoon City and whether this reboot captures the feeling of playing survival horror. Plus: the difference between a resourceful survivor and a guy who suddenly has blockbuster plot armor. After Barbarian and Weapons, does Cregger's approach work inside a major franchise? And should Resident Evil make you laugh this much? FULL SPOILERS, including the ending and our most messed-up moments. Tell us where you landed: did the horror-comedy balance work, or did you want the movie to stay as tense as its opening? Subscribe to Misfit Parade for New Movie Monday reviews, Friday movie drafts and more Messed Up Movies. Our debut feature, Mr. Creamjeans' Hidey Hole, has its world premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 22 at 8 p.m. CT at Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin.
