Summary
An elderly couple narrowly escaped tragedy after their car was swept off the road by flash floods in Cochise County—pinned against a tree, stranded in rising waters. With rescue crews blocked by floodwaters and helicopters grounded due to weather, dispatchers used a second cell signal to locate them a thousand feet off the main road. Swiftwater rescuers and local police battled debris to extract the couple, walking them to safety through treacherous conditions. Both were taken to hospital and are recovering. Authorities are using this harrowing incident to reinforce the lifesaving message: turn around, don’t drown—especially during monsoon season when water levels can rise in seconds.
