Summary
The federal government is unveiling a historic plan to cut water allocations from the Colorado River, hitting Arizona, California, and Nevada hardest — with potential consequences like skyrocketing bills, groundwater dependence, and farm closures. After years of stalled talks among seven states, this move aims to avert disaster as the river dries up. Arizona’s Governor Hobbs is pushing back, urging a compromise that protects her state’s economy and avoids the harshest cuts — while farmers in Pinal County already feel the pain. The Lower Basin states are stepping in with their own proposal, hoping the federal plan will adopt their conservation blueprint, though they warn some options unfairly target Arizona and ignore Upper Basin reductions. Final decisions will be made by 2028, with hopes of a fair, long-term solution that balances survival and equity across the West.
