Summary
Australia is set to build its first new oil refinery in 60 years, potentially in Western Australia, as part of a bold plan to shield the nation from global oil supply shocks. With gas prices already rising and Middle East tensions threatening inflation, the federal and WA governments are investing $4 million in a feasibility study. Backed by Perdaman — the same company behind a major Pilbara fertilizer project — the refinery could get government support like special loans, despite environmental pushback. This move follows BP’s closure of Fremantle’s refinery in 2021, leaving Australia with just two refineries. The prime minister and WA premier will announce the funding, aiming to secure energy independence — even as critics warn it’s a step backward in the climate fight.
