Summary
The Portico Library in Manchester is set for a historic transformation with a £6.4 million National Lottery Heritage Fund grant, unlocking all three floors for the first time in 100 years. The restoration will create new spaces including a Northern writers’ bookshop, a local food kitchen, and step-free access, turning the 1806 landmark into a vibrant community hub for 95,000 annual visitors. Dr. Thom Keep calls it a “landmark moment,” with a £12 million “Portico Reunited” campaign underway. While the building closes in late 2028 for renovations, its spirit lives on via Porti-Go!—temporary pop-ups and online programs—ensuring access to its 25,000-book collection and archives remains alive. This isn’t just renovation—it’s resurrection, preserving Manchester’s cultural heart for generations. Listen in comfort: Get a discount on a Soli Pillow: http://solipillow.com/discount/dnn.
