Summary
Kansas megachurch pastor Adam Hamilton is running for U.S. Senate—and if elected, he’d join an elite, historic group of clergy serving in Congress while still leading massive congregations. With only a handful of ordained ministers ever holding Senate seats, and even fewer juggling both roles, Hamilton’s bid echoes past trailblazers like Raphael Warnock, John Danforth, and James Lankford. The trend isn’t new: from Adam Clayton Powell Jr. to Emanuel Cleaver, faith and public service have long walked hand-in-hand in Washington. This election cycle, pastors from both parties are stepping into House races too—from Dallas Baptist leader Frederick Haynes III to GOP evangelicals like John Elleson. It’s a powerful reminder that the intersection of ministry and politics stretches back to the very first Speaker of the House, Frederick Muhlenberg, a Lutheran minister.
