Summary
Alexander Zverev just claimed his second major of the year by defeating Ben Shelton in a gripping U.S. Open final, extending his hot streak since winning the French Open earlier this season. As the top seed, Zverev exploited Shelton’s nerves with a flawless tiebreaker and held off late comebacks, despite a roaring crowd rooting for the 23-year-old American — hoping he’d become the first Black man to win the men’s title since Arthur Ashe in 1968 and the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2003. Shelton, who stunned the tennis world by beating the defending champ in a marathon match, fell short against Zverev’s composure under pressure. The German, who narrowly lost a two-set lead in last year’s U.S. Open final (a feat not seen since 1949), now stands at 25-2 in majors and walks away with $5.5 million — matching women’s prize money. Shelton’s future looks bright; he’s got the game to contend at the highest level. But for fans craving an American men’s champion, this one stings — and the wait continues.
