Summary
The Padres take Game 1 of the Wild Card Series with an emphatic 8–0 shutout of the Chicago Cubs at Petco Park—and the night ends with one of the most emotional moments of the season. Michael King was sensational, holding the Cubs’ high-powered offense hitless through six and one-third innings and finishing with seven scoreless innings, one hit, three walks and eight strikeouts. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado went back-to-back in the first inning to give San Diego an immediate lead. Manny added a double and a walk; Fernando reached base, scored three times and stole a base. Jackson Merrill drove in two, while Xander Bogaerts, Ty France and three other Padres joined the two-hit parade. San Diego finished with 13 hits, and five Padres recorded two-hit games. Then came Joe Musgrove. The San Diego native, returning to the mound after missing the last two regular seasons during his recovery from elbow surgery and Tommy John surgery, entered in the ninth to a massive Petco ovation. With the bases loaded and two outs, Musgrove delivered the final pitch of the night: a called strike three. The crowd exploded, and the Padres had their shutout. Game 1 matters in a best-of-three series. Before tonight, 21 of the previous 24 Game 1 winners had gone on to win their Wild Card Series, with 17 series ending in sweeps. The Padres have put themselves in the driver’s seat, but they still need one more win to advance.
