Summary
The San Diego Padres are charging into October! San Diego defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 9-4 in the regular-season finale, finishing 91-71 with 51 victories at Petco Park and an incredible 17-3 record over its final 20 games. The Padres scored in six consecutive innings and produced nine runs on 11 hits despite resting Fernando Tatis Jr., Jackson Merrill, Xander Bogaerts and Ethan Salas. Freddy Fermin delivered the biggest hits of the afternoon, finishing 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. His RBI double restored San Diego’s three-run lead in the sixth, and his two-run single in the seventh broke a 4-4 tie after Arizona reliever Justin Martinez walked four consecutive Padres. Randy Vásquez was outstanding, allowing only one run on three hits over six innings. He did not walk a batter and threw 54 strikes in just 68 pitches, strengthening his case to become a valuable multi-inning weapon in the postseason bullpen. Gavin Sheets made a powerful statement in his return to the lineup, launching a 423-foot home run to center field. Austin Hays added the knockout punch with a two-run single in the eighth, while Dustin Harris and Ty France each recorded two hits and scored twice. Arizona entered the game fighting for its postseason life and rallied from a 4-1 deficit to tie the game in the seventh. But the Diamondbacks’ bullpen completely collapsed, walking four consecutive hitters before Fermin delivered the go-ahead hit. The loss eliminated Arizona and sent Philadelphia into the final National League playoff position.
