In Regional Impacts, Syria has emerged from a decade-long drought as water levels stabilize, though the region’s water story remains unsettled. The drought pushed groundwater down as much as sixty percent in eastern Syria and dried wells, with Iraq and Iran affected as well; Mosul dam’s water level declined and Lake Tharthar dried out, and Lake Urmia in Iran had dried previously. Now, the dams are full from Turkey through Syria to Iraq, and lakes are filling, but the shift brings flooding rather than scarcity.
