Stanislaus of Kraków, born around 1030 in Szczepanów, became Bishop of Kraków and was renowned for his learning, pastoral zeal, and fearless defense of moral law against tyranny; during the troubled reign of Bolesław II the Bold, Stanislaus openly rebuked the king’s grave injustices, especially his cruelty and scandalous conduct, and ultimately pronounced excommunication when admonitions failed, an act that provoked royal fury. According to tradition, while celebrating Mass at the Church of St. Michael outside Kraków in 1079, he was struck down by the king or his agents, thus sealing his witness with martyrdom; a famous legend recounts that he had earlier raised a man named Piotrowin from the dead to testify in a disputed case, demonstrating divine favor toward his episcopal authority.
